Tapio Wirkkala created the Ultima Thule series in 1968 after being inspired by the melting ice in Lapland. Originally Wirkkala created a carefully carved and chiseled mold made of wood. Each piece of the Ultima Thule barware collection is an exclusive design that reflects thousands of hours spent mastering glass-blowing techniques required to produce the desired effect. Each piece features a sophisticated, intriguing pattern that evolved organically during production as the glass burned the surface of the wooden molds.
Tapio Wirkkala was born in Hanko Finland. A versatile genius synonymous with Finnish design, Wirkkala’s contributions to the world of functional art include everything from elegant glassware to the design of banknotes. He has served as the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki. During his world renowned career, he has participated in may international exhibitions and has won a vast array of awards including gold medals at the Triennale in Milan.
